I take it the stereo still works and it is just the lighting. Have you done the obvious (such as checking your dash lighting switch)? I don't have the same radio/CD player in mine so it is hard to say if it could be the stereo itself, or maybe a broken wire, or even a bad fuse? I would start there for troubleshooting. If you have a schematic of the radio or the installation instructions or a wiring schematic for your car, check that for the wire that goes to the lighting. Hope this helps.

I checked all the fuses, all is ok. But that switch if that is it (drivers side under dash, chimes 3 times and dash goes on and off couple of times) has been bothering me, since the lady that owned that car didnt know what is it for..

so you are telling me that switch is for dash?! why would i need one?!

it is operational but screen does not lit up, i will check wires and let you know....

I had a few Kenwood and Kawasaki head units that did that - they all had red LED displays - never lasted more than a year before they dimmed out completely. When that happens, cheaper to get a new head unit than trying to fix it. But if your Kenwood has a LCD display and not a LED display - it might be a bad power wiring running to the unit. You'll have to probe the power wires coming into the unit as many older LCD displayed Kenwoods had separate power leads for the main power and LCD display. Since that is definitely non-OEM - you'll have to pull the unit and double check all the wiring yourself. Look for the obvious - broken or loose wires, hacked up wiring harness, poor ground, bad connection to power source (see where they tapped the power from), or anything obviously burned. If that doesn't pan out - try hooking it up directly to battery (fused for safety) to see if the unit is OK. If the display doesn't light up - then the unit is probably on its way out.

I think all cars have a dimmer switch for the dash lighting so the driver can alter the amount of illumination to the instruments to suite their taste. If the dimmer switch is bad, it may be affecting your radio.

Most aftermarket stereos don't have an automatic dimming with the rest of the lights dimming feature. The dimming wire is simply left unwired to anything, thus the dimmer should not effect your aftermarket stereo in any way. BTW: when I say most stereos, I mean all but the top of the line aftermarket units.

My JVC KD-SX980 unit do have this auto dimming function. The screen darkens when I turn the gauge light on. It just doesn't dim together with the rest of gauge illumination like my Toyota OEM head units do when I turn the knob.

And it's not that high end either - decent but not top of the line.
